Van Layout Planning: A Measured Design Method

A strong van floor plan is a tested sequence of traveling, standing, cooking, sleeping, washing and servicing equipment—not a collection of cabinets fitted into a rectangle.

Layout planning begins with a day in the van, not a catalog. Describe who wakes first, where wet shoes land, how a meal is prepared, whether two people work inside, and what happens when the bed is deployed. Those sequences expose requirements that a rendered floor plan misses.

Mark each requirement as must, should or optional. If the must list cannot fit while preserving payload and movement, choose a larger base vehicle or remove a feature. Compare platforms in the US base-van guide.

Measure the actual van

Record internal length and width at floor, mattress, shoulder and ceiling heights. Account for insulation and finish build-up. Map wheel wells, ribs, sliding-door travel, rear-door mechanisms, factory wiring, fuel fills, air bags and the driver's full seat movement.

Use a fixed origin for every measurement and photograph it. Manufacturer drawings are a starting point, not proof of the dimension in your exact trim.

Payload is part of the floor plan. The vehicle's Tire and Loading Information label gives the combined occupant-and-cargo limit; water alone weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon. Keep batteries, water, tools and other dense loads low and consider both gross vehicle weight and individual axle ratings. Weigh the completed van by axle in travel condition.

Arrange zones before cabinets

Map travel seating, entry, cooking, sleep, washing/toilet, work/dining, utilities and dirty storage. Combine zones that share services without combining incompatible risks. A galley near the water tank can shorten plumbing; water connections should still not sit above batteries or distribution gear.

Keep a usable exit path in every configuration. If a bench will be occupied while driving, treat it as crash-safety engineering. NHTSA explains that designated rear seating positions require appropriate restraint systems and that commercial modifiers may not make compliant safety equipment inoperative; see its van seat and belt interpretation. A furniture bench is not made safe by adding a lap belt to thin sheet metal.

Make the mockup full size

Tape the plan on a floor, then add cardboard walls and worktops. Use real gear. Test entering in rain, opening the refrigerator, cooking past another person, making the bed, accessing the toilet at night and removing the pump strainer. Sit in the work position for an hour.

A Class B or camper van rental turns the prototype into evidence. Note conversion time, morning condensation, blocked cabinets, garage loading and the features you never use.

Freeze the expensive interfaces

Before cutting, settle windows, roof openings, engineered travel seats, bed envelope, major tanks, batteries, heater and primary wire/pipe routes. Leave dividers and minor shelves adjustable. Follow the exact base-vehicle upfitter documentation and appliance clearances.

Coordinate those decisions through the complete conversion plan. Check state registration and insurance rules before modifying seating, structural systems or vehicle classification.

Sign off the plan

  • Every sleeper fits at finished dimensions.
  • All occupied travel positions use engineered seating and restraints.
  • Occupants, liquids, furniture and cargo remain within payload and axle ratings.
  • Doors work in day and night modes.
  • Cooking and sleeping have controlled ventilation.
  • Service components can be removed without demolishing furniture.
  • Water is separated from electrical equipment.
  • A real mockup and a complete daily routine have been tested.

The right floor plan is usually the one with fewer unresolved compromises, not the most features. Give every cubic foot a job and every service a way back out.
