Storage design begins with the things being carried. List food, tools, recovery equipment, bikes, bedding, water and seasonal gear. Record approximate weight, use frequency, whether it is wet or dirty and whether it must be reached from outside.
Put mass in the right place
Dense loads belong low and as close to the axle area as the layout permits. Cargo behind the rear axle has a stronger effect on rear axle loading. Include people, water, batteries, furniture and food against the exact Tire and Loading Information label, then weigh the trip-ready van by axle.

Build and load-test one representative cabinet before multiplying the method. Strength comes from load paths, joints and attachment—not merely a thick sheet.
Follow manufacturer upfitter rules
The van maker's body/equipment manual identifies approved attachment areas, no-drill zones, wiring and safety constraints. Do not drill through a rib because it appears strong. Protect factory wiring, fuel systems, air bags and corrosion protection.
Seat, belt or structural safety work needs qualified engineering. NHTSA cautions commercial modifiers not to make compliant restraints and safety systems inoperative; see its conversion-van guidance. State registration and insurance requirements may also apply.
Restrain contents, not just doors
Use positive mechanical latches. Separate dense objects so they cannot build momentum inside a cabinet before hitting the door. Keep overhead storage for light soft goods and provide a retainer so contents do not fall when opened.
Round head-height corners, secure removable shelves, capture table legs and latch every sliding platform in travel and deployed positions. Open baskets are suitable only when their contents cannot become projectiles.
Preserve service access
The pump strainer, tank drain, electrical protection, battery terminals, heater and refrigerator must remain inspectable and removable. Use screwed access panels and label isolators. Photograph wire and pipe routes before closing walls.
Coordinate cabinets with the water-system guide, electrical calculator and complete floor-plan method. Keep plumbing away from electrical distribution and maintain all appliance ventilation clearances.
Control damp and noise
Vent mattress bases and wet lockers, avoid blocking permanent vents and seal exposed edges in spill zones. Rattles indicate movement: use dividers, preload catches and support utilities independently instead of filling cavities indiscriminately.
Test before trim
- Weigh each furniture unit.
- Load it with the real inventory.
- Test the latch while contents press against it.
- Confirm all service parts can be removed.
- Drive a rough but safe route.
- Inspect fasteners, joints, chafe and witness marks.
- Weigh the fully stocked van by axle.
- Add cosmetic covers only after inspection passes.
Storage should make departure predictable and maintenance possible. If a cabinet saves a few minutes during construction but hides a future leak or overloads the axle, it is not lightweight design.
