About Roam Wired

Roam Wired started from a simple frustration: when we built our first campervan, figuring out the electrical system was the hardest part. Spreadsheets, forum threads, and guesswork were the norm. We thought there had to be a better way.

So we built the tool we wished we had — a free calculator that takes your appliance list and spits out a properly sized battery, solar setup, wiring gauge, and fuse schedule. With a wiring diagram.

Along the way, we wrote the guides we wished existed too: clear, opinionated, safety-first, and localized properly for where you actually build — the UK and the US.

We believe everyone should have access to safe electrical design tools, regardless of budget. A badly wired van is a fire risk. If our calculator prevents even one fire, it was worth building.

Van electrical advice doesn't travel well across borders — different voltages, products, suppliers and standards. So we build a properly localized version for each region rather than a one-size-fits-all tool.

In the UK (roamwired.com), everything is 230V, priced in GBP, and follows BS 7671 Section 721 with UK suppliers. In the US (roamwired.com/us), it's 120V, priced in USD, follows NEC Article 551 / ABYC, and recommends US brands like LiTime, Battle Born, Renogy and Victron. Same engineering, the right numbers for where you build.

Every calculation in our tool follows established safety practices: the 125% fuse rule, proper wire gauge tables for voltage drop, and recommended best practices for LiFePO4 and AGM battery systems. We err on the side of caution — always.

That said, we are a tool, not a certified electrician. For complex installations, we always recommend getting a qualified professional to check your work.
