Self-builder, two van builds, and the founder of Roam Wired.
I’ve built two vans. The hardest and most time-consuming part was learning about the electrical system: understanding what I needed, how the pieces fitted together and how to turn that research into a plan.
I created Roam Wired to simplify that process for other people. My aim is to make converting a van more accessible by sharing as many free tools as I can, starting with the electrical planning that took so much time during my own builds.
From my own build
These photos are from one of my conversions, a Fiat Ducato. They show the parts of the electrical system that took me longest to plan.
Experience and limits
My background is as a self-builder. Roam Wired shares planning tools and educational guidance; it does not present my two van builds as an electrical qualification. A calculator result is a starting point for planning and needs checking against the equipment, installation and vehicle it will be used in.
Electrical installation decisions, particularly mains-voltage work, need appropriate qualified input. An author byline does not mean an article has been independently reviewed by an electrician.
