There is no universal winner among the three dominant full-size US conversion platforms. The correct answer begins with a measured floor plan, loaded-weight estimate, climate, travel surface and nearby service options. A sound second-choice model is a better base than a neglected example of the internet favorite.

Current specifications illustrate why the exact variant matters. Ram lists the 2026 ProMaster with front-wheel drive, a low cargo floor and up to 75 inches of cargo width. Ford's 2026 Transit specifications show materially different cargo lengths and roof heights. Mercedes-Benz publishes multiple Sprinter cargo configurations. Those are current new-vehicle references; a used van must be checked by VIN, label and actual measurement.
Choose roof and wheelbase from use
Low or compact roof
Useful for daily driving, garages and simple sleep/storage builds. If standing requires a pop-top, price and engineer that choice early. Do not assume “weekend van” means light: seats, pop-top, batteries and furniture still consume payload.
Medium/high roof full-size van
Standing room changes bad-weather usability and enables overhead storage. A medium wheelbase can be a strong two-person compromise. Extended bodies support fixed beds, bathrooms and gear garages but add rear overhang, turning/parking difficulty, material and finished weight.
Tape the interior footprint on a floor with true wheel arches, door openings and finished wall thickness. Rehearse bed access, cooking and another person passing. A dimension table cannot show whether the workflow is frustrating.
Consider alternatives to the three big full-size vans
The familiar platforms are not the only rational choices.
- Minivans suit stealthier daily use, solo travel and removable builds when standing height and large systems are not requirements. Verify payload after passengers and gear.
- Ford Transit Connect and similar used compact cargo vans can support very simple builds, but the US new-vehicle market and parts trajectory have changed. Research the exact year and local support rather than assuming a current replacement exists.
- Nissan NV cargo vans remain in the used market despite discontinued US production. Their shape and conventional drivetrain appeal to some builders, but condition, parts/service horizon and limited high-roof supply matter.
- Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana provide a long-running body-on-frame platform and broad service familiarity, normally without factory standing height. They fit lower-roof, pop-top and some cutaway-based concepts.
- Box trucks and cutaway chassis offer square volume but introduce commercial dimensions, pass-through fabrication, registration/insurance questions, parking and a very different driving experience.
Choose an unconventional platform only because it solves a written requirement. A low purchase price does not compensate for an unsuitable roof, insufficient payload, unavailable parts or a conversion that becomes hard to insure and resell.
Bed orientation: measure at the bed
Maximum published cargo width is not finished sleeping length. Body curvature, ribs, insulation, furring and wall panels reduce it. Measure at the intended mattress height and include ventilation and bedding clearance. Tall sleepers may need a north–south bed even in a wide platform; that requires more floor length but can improve comfort and access.
Payload and axle limits
Start with a scale weight for the purchased van, not a brochure's maximum payload. Subtract from the applicable GVWR and track every fixed component plus passengers, water, fuel, food, bikes and equipment. One gallon of water weighs about 8.34 lb. Tanks, batteries, tile and heavy hardwood compound quickly.
Maintain an axle plan as well as a total. Heavy water and batteries placed behind the rear axle can create a rear-axle problem before reaching GVWR. Keep operating margin for normal packing and measurement uncertainty.
Drivetrain should follow real routes
Front-wheel drive creates a low ProMaster floor and a different packaging/driving experience. Rear-wheel-drive Transit and Sprinter variants place drivetrain components beneath the floor. AWD availability can help on some surfaces, but it adds cost and does not override road closures, clearance, tires or judgment.
Write the roads you actually expect: maintained campgrounds, winter mountain passes, desert tracks, ski areas or urban daily use. Buy for the 90% pattern, then solve rare conditions through route choice rather than building an expedition van by default.
Service access is part of the specification
Before buying, call independent shops and dealers near home and along likely travel regions. Ask whether they service the exact roof height, wheelbase, engine and model year. Some lifts and bays cannot accept tall or extended vans; some shops limit diesel or European-platform work. Map realistic towing and service options instead of relying on brand-level dealer counts.
Request insurance indications using the actual VIN and intended conversion. Ask how coverage changes during the build, what documentation or appraisal the finished van requires and whether DIY electrical, propane, roof or seating work affects underwriting. Get answers in writing where possible. Registration and insurance friction can outweigh a small purchase-price advantage.
Resale should not control the build, but it belongs in the risk check. A documented, serviceable platform with labeled systems, accessible utilities and weight records is easier for a future buyer to understand than a unique van with hidden work and no evidence.
Used cargo-van inspection
Verify title status, VIN, odometer history, liens as applicable and that every label agrees. Inspect from a cold start. Look beneath load-floor coverings and around roof seams, doors, sills and prior shelving holes. Check for crash repair, chemical residue, water tracks, corrosion, uneven tires and fluid leaks.
During the drive, use city traffic, highway speed, braking and grades where safe. Assess steering, wheel bearing/suspension noise, transmission behavior, cooling, warning lights and exhaust aftertreatment. A diagnostic scan and pre-purchase inspection by a shop familiar with that platform are small expenses compared with engine, transmission or emissions repairs.
Prior modifications need evidence. Check roof openings, windows, auxiliary wiring, seat mounts, airbags, driver-assistance sensors and structural cuts. NHTSA's interpretation on conversion vans discusses federal safety-equipment obligations, including not making required systems inoperative; title, registration and inspection rules also vary by state. Verify the plan with your state DMV, insurer and qualified installer before modifying safety-critical systems.
Set the purchase limit backward
Take the whole-project ceiling and subtract:
- conversion materials and contracted work;
- immediate mechanical baseline;
- repair contingency;
- tax, title, registration and insurance;
- security, storage and required inspections;
- an untouched finishing reserve.
What remains is the van budget. Use the US conversion cost guide and planning sequence before shopping. Walk away when the payload is wrong, records conflict or the seller blocks an independent inspection.
