Choose the van before you design the conversion

Start with what the finished van must do, then choose the vehicle. Write down passenger numbers, sleeping arrangements, standing-height needs, equipment, storage and where you expect to park. A compact van may make weekday use easier but force compromises in bed length or wet-weather living space. A larger body offers more room while increasing the importance of parking access, manoeuvring and a realistic payload calculation. Measure the usable interior rather than buying from photographs alone.

Separate the vehicle purchase budget from repairs and the conversion. A lower advertised price can leave expensive corrosion, mechanical work or missing service history to resolve before the build starts. Compare vehicles on condition, documented maintenance, legal seating and suitability for the intended conversion. Treat any seller description of payload, weight or conversion approval as something to verify against the vehicle records and applicable authority guidance.

A rental trip is useful research if you deliberately test the layout. Record how the bed feels, where wet coats go, how often you move bags to cook, and how much water and electricity you use. Try a rainy evening as well as an outdoor summer day. The result should be a short list of requirements, rather than a shopping list of features copied from someone else’s van.
