Most RV leaks begin at a connection, transition or unsupported line—not in the middle of an undamaged PEX run. System reliability improves when there are fewer joints, one compatible fitting method and access to every high-consequence connection.
Select a complete tubing family
Confirm documentation for:
- potable-water contact;
- maximum cold and hot temperature;
- pressure rating at those temperatures;
- tubing outside dimension and wall specification;
- compatible crimp, clamp, expansion or push fittings;
- bend radius and support intervals;
- mobile/vibration use where stated.
Nominal 1/2-inch does not guarantee interchangeability. A pump swivel fitting, NPT adapter, PEX tube and braided hose may each seal differently. Record manufacturer and product number for tubing, fittings and tools.
PEX connection choices
Crimp rings
Widely available and compact. They require the correct crimp tool, gauge checks and sufficient working space. A ring installed at the wrong position can pass a quick test and fail later.
Stainless cinch clamps
Use one tool across some sizes and are practical in tight spaces. Confirm clamp and fitting compatibility and inspect the completed ear/closure.
Expansion systems
Often associated with PEX-A and can provide a full-flow connection. They require the specific tubing, rings and powered or manual expansion tool.
Push-to-connect
Fast and useful for service, but the tube must be clean, square and inserted fully. Confirm approval for the tubing and temperature. Prevent side load and keep critical connections accessible.
Do not combine methods casually. Build a small test loop with the purchased batch before installing behind walls.
Flexible hose around the pump
Pentair's Shurflo 4008 manual calls for flexible braided high-flow hose at inlet and outlet and warns that rigid plumbing can transmit motion, loosen or crack components. Follow the exact pump instructions.

Branched versus manifold plumbing

A sink-only van may need one cold line. A galley, shower, toilet and exterior wash point often benefit from a labeled manifold. The correct answer minimizes inaccessible joints and supports winterization.
Route and support the lines
Overlay plumbing with wiring, heat ducts, exhaust clearances and cabinet fasteners. If those systems are being professionally installed, compare relevant van builders before the walls close. Then:
- keep runs short;
- remove dead-end branches;
- create deliberate low points and drains;
- protect every metal/wood penetration;
- support PEX without crushing it;
- allow controlled expansion near hot lines;
- keep water fittings away from electrical distribution;
- avoid joints in permanently enclosed cavities;
- label hot, cold, bypass and drain valves;
- photograph with dimensions before closing walls.
Do not pull tubing tight. Temperature and chassis movement require some allowance, but loose coils can rattle and trap water.
Tank fill, vent and drain
Fill and vent hose are generally larger than fixture PEX. The vent must release air during filling and admit air during pump draw. Keep it sanitary, protected from pests/road spray and free of water-trapping sags.
Use a full-port tank shutoff and a low drain that can actually empty the tank on level ground. Route drains away from exhaust, brakes and electrical equipment. Follow authorized disposal rules.
Use a dedicated potable-water fill hose with capped ends. The CDC's RV water safety guide says to confirm campground water is safe to drink and follow the RV manufacturer's sanitation process.
Hot-water plumbing
Verify tubing and connector ratings at the heater's maximum water temperature and pressure. Install the exact required check valves, bypass, relief discharge, mixer and expansion accommodation. Never cap a temperature-pressure relief valve.
Keep hot PEX short to reduce wasted gallons. Protect it from exhaust and heat sources beyond its rating. The RV water-heater guide covers tank, tankless and hydronic system differences.
Make reliable joints
For any system:
- cut square with its approved cutter;
- remove scratches and deformation;
- slide rings/clamps into the specified position;
- use the calibrated tool correctly;
- gauge crimped joints when required;
- mark push-fitting insertion depth;
- avoid side-loading adapters;
- use only specified sealant on threaded connections.
NPT threads, swivel cone fittings and gasketed hose connections do not seal the same way. Thread tape can lubricate a plastic pump port enough to cause over-tightening, and fragments can enter valves.
Test in stages
Before water
Inspect tool marks, ring position, insertion depth, supports, penetrations and valve arrows. Photograph all joints.
Cold operating pressure
Fill from a safe source and purge air. Run the pump to shutoff, switch it off and wipe every connection dry. Inspect with tissue. Do not exceed the lowest-rated part or improvise a high-pressure air test.
Functional states
Run each fixture alone and in the intended combinations. Operate bypass, city-water regulator (if present), tank fill and low-point drains. Watch gray drainage and listen for tube impact.
Hot cycle
Commission the heater from its manual. Inspect through heat-up, full temperature and cool-down. Thermal movement can expose joints that stayed dry when cold.
Road vibration
Drive with realistic water load and reinspect fittings, tank supports and penetrations. Repeat after the first long trip.
Carry a matched repair kit
- compatible straight coupling and end cap;
- short piece of installed PEX;
- correct cutter and connection tool;
- pump swivel seals and strainer gasket;
- valve map and photos;
- towels and leak alarm if used.
An end cap can isolate a damaged fixture only when the line is accessible. Design for repair before failure instead of hiding extra connectors behind decorative panels.
Make every branch winterizable
Map low-point drains, heater bypass, filters, toilet and exterior fixtures so no hidden pocket stays full.
