Water expands when it freezes, and the smallest trapped pocket can split an expensive valve or heat exchanger. Proper winterization covers every component and follows the exact RV and appliance manuals; a generic checklist cannot know the valve layout of one vehicle.
Choose operating or storage mode
Wet four-season operation
All fresh plumbing stays in a reliably heated envelope with monitored propane/fuel and electrical power. Exterior connections, dump valves and underbody lines still need protection. A furnace duct pointed near a tank does not prove every elbow remains above freezing.
Drained winter storage
The complete system is drained, blown out or filled with approved RV antifreeze according to its design. The water heater, pump and filters may each need a different treatment.
Insulation only slows heat loss. Use the van insulation and heating guides, but retain a documented shutdown process for power or fuel loss.
Inventory every water pocket
- fresh tank and outlet;
- city-water regulator/check valve;
- tank fill and vent;
- pump strainer and head;
- accumulator;
- whole-house and drinking filters;
- hot and cold low points;
- tank or tankless water heater;
- ice maker, washer or dishwasher if fitted;
- kitchen and bathroom faucets;
- shower hose and outside shower;
- toilet flush valve/sprayer;
- black-tank flush connection;
- P-traps, gray tank and dump valves.
Mark the drain or antifreeze path for each on a diagram. If a branch has no method, the plumbing needs modification or professional winterization.
Let the exact manuals choose the method
Winnebago's 2024 towable owner manual includes model-specific low-point drains, water-heater draining, regulated blow-out and potable RV-antifreeze steps. Other RVs use different valve locations and pressures.
Water heaters differ even more. Winnebago's Truma winterization guide shows separate AquaGo and Combi drain arrangements. Aqua-Hot states that some domestic-water coils cannot be winterized by air and require approved RV antifreeze. Never apply one heater's procedure to another; use the van builder directory to find regional professional help when the valve map is unclear.
Drain-and-blow framework
Use only if the full equipment documentation allows it:
- Park with the designed drains at their actual low points.
- Turn off and cool the water heater.
- Disconnect shore power and isolate propane/fuel as instructed.
- Shut off water pump and city-water supply.
- Open a faucet to relieve pressure.
- Drain fresh, gray and black tanks at an authorized facility.
- Open low-point and tank drains.
- Bypass and drain the water heater by its exact procedure.
- Remove filter cartridges and empty housings.
- Connect the approved blow-out adapter and regulated pressure.
- Clear one hot/cold fixture at a time in the manual's order.
- Include toilet, sprayers, exterior shower and appliance branches.
- Empty pump/strainer or operate only as specifically instructed.
- Protect traps and leave valves in the required storage position.
Do not exceed the lowest component PSI. Compressed air stores energy and can eject contaminated water; wear appropriate eye protection and control every outlet. Air following an easy branch does not prove every low point is empty.
RV-antifreeze framework
Use only nontoxic RV/marine potable-system antifreeze permitted by the manuals. Never use automotive coolant.
A common compatible arrangement is:
- drain tanks and heater;
- put the heater in bypass;
- remove/bypass water filters;
- set winterization valves to draw from an antifreeze container;
- run the pump;
- open each hot and cold fixture until the approved product appears;
- include toilet and exterior fixtures;
- protect traps as instructed;
- turn the pump off and return valves to the documented storage state.
This is not universal. Some components need a special sequence, quantity or complete exclusion. Do not put antifreeze in the fresh tank unless the RV maker directs it; a suction bypass reduces product and spring flushing.
Dispose of antifreeze and waste according to product, campground and local rules. “Nontoxic” does not mean appropriate for soil or storm drains.
Water-heater hazards
Before removing a drain plug, anode or filter cartridge:
- turn the heater off;
- isolate energy;
- let water cool;
- shut off pump/city pressure;
- open a faucet to depressurize;
- stand clear of hot discharge.
Never energize an empty tank heater. Do not assume powered freeze protection works during storage; it may require continuous 12V, propane or both. Follow the RV water-heater guide and exact manual.
Storage hygiene
The CDC's Safe RV Water from Tank to Tap recommends following the RV maker for draining, disinfecting and flushing at least annually or after several months out of use. It also says many taste filters do not remove germs.
Remove wet cartridges when directed, clean shower heads, cap potable-fill hoses and protect open connections from pests. Keep sewer gear physically separate from drinking-water equipment.
De-winterize and sanitize
- Inspect exposed PEX, tank supports, valves and wiring for damage.
- Restore drains, bypass and winterization valves to normal as documented.
- Install new or correctly stored filters.
- Fill with potable water.
- Flush RV antifreeze from every hot and cold branch.
- Drain and refill as required by the RV procedure.
- Sanitize at the concentration and contact time in the vehicle/tank manual.
- Flush completely with safe water.
- Confirm the water heater is full before energizing.
- Pressure-test, inspect and commission the heater.
Do not invent a bleach dose from an unrelated emergency-water article; tank volumes, materials and manufacturer procedures matter. If odor, color or system history is doubtful, use separate safe drinking water and obtain professional assessment.

Design checklist for next winter
- accessible labeled low-point drains;
- reachable heater bypass and drain;
- visible continuous-fall drain outlets;
- removable pump strainer and filters;
- winterization suction connection if required;
- regulator/blow-out point only if approved;
- no hidden dead legs or sagging lines;
- toilet and outdoor fixtures included;
- documented maximum blow-out PSI;
- pump/heater lockout labels;
- manuals and valve diagram stored offline.
Winterization is easy only when the complete water system was designed for it. Fix inaccessible valves and trapped branches before the next freeze rather than repeating a fragile workaround.
