An automatic RV demand pump senses pressure: it starts when a faucet lowers system pressure and stops at a defined shutoff PSI. The right installation therefore depends on the whole circuit, including restrictions, elevation, heater limits, wire voltage and fixture flow.

The pump's shutoff pressure must be compatible with the lowest number in the table. A regulator may be appropriate for a city-water connection, but it is not a reason to install a poorly matched onboard pump.
The current Shurflo 4008 variants illustrate why the exact model matters: Pentair lists different GPM, current and shutoff-pressure specifications. Its 4008 manual requires properly sized plumbing and wiring, inlet straining, flexible connections and an accessible mounting location.
Size GPM from actual fixtures
Measure each fixture by filling a one-gallon container and timing it. Convert seconds to GPM, then decide which fixtures realistically operate together.
Excess pump flow can:
- empty the fresh tank faster;
- fill gray storage rapidly;
- increase pipe and cabinet noise;
- exceed a small heater's stable flow range;
- make shower temperature harder to control.
Pressure overcomes resistance; it does not create water. A 55 PSI pump is not automatically better than a 40–45 PSI design. Match GPM and shutoff PSI to the exact RV.
Protect the suction side
Pumps are more sensitive to inlet restriction than many builders expect. Use a short path with:
- a tank outlet that stays submerged in normal vehicle attitudes;
- an accessible full-port shutoff;
- the specified cleanable inlet strainer;
- suction-rated flexible hose where required;
- minimum elbows and restrictive winterization valves.
Pentair recommends mounting the 4008 within 6 ft of the tank for best performance and using at least 1/2-inch inside-diameter plumbing for that model. Those numbers are not universal—use the manual for the selected pump—but the principles of short inlet, low restriction and service access apply broadly.
Air can enter an imperfect suction fitting without water leaking outward. Symptoms include failure to prime, bubbles, surging and extra noise. Confirm fittings seal by their intended method; thread tape on a pump port designed to seal internally can contribute to cracks or valve contamination.
Stop the cabinet becoming a speaker
Mount on a firm surface and tighten the rubber feet only as directed. A thin vertical panel amplifies motor pulses. Provide ventilation and room to remove the pump and strainer.
Use flexible braided high-pressure hose on both sides where the manual specifies it. Support the transition to PEX and prevent tubing from hitting partitions. A hard PEX elbow screwed directly to a vibrating pump can transmit noise and stress the port.
Keep the pump away from electrical distribution where possible. Strainer service releases water; design a catch path.
Wire from maximum current and length
Use:
- the exact pump maximum amps;
- total positive-plus-negative circuit length;
- the manufacturer's allowed voltage drop;
- required fuse or breaker;
- a rated pump switch or relay/controller;
- protected, strain-relieved terminals.
Pentair specifies a minimum circuit and wire guidance for the 4008, but another model can differ. Add the real load to the US van electrical calculator, then reconcile its output with the product instructions.
The pump needs a dedicated shutoff. Turn it off while traveling when required by the RV maker, when the fresh tank is empty, while away from the vehicle and whenever an unexplained cycle suggests a leak.
Accumulator decisions
An accumulator holds a small volume under pressure and can smooth pulses at low flow. It may reduce starts for brief handwashing and help some non-bypass pumps. It is not always required: Pentair states its 4008 bypass pump does not need one.
If used, select a potable-water accumulator with adequate pressure and temperature rating. Precharge it to the value specified for the pump/system, isolate power and water pressure before adjustment, and keep the valve accessible. Wrong precharge can make cycling worse.
Commission every operating state
- Flush construction particles before the pump or heater.
- Fill from a known potable source.
- Open a cold fixture and run the pump only long enough to prime.
- Purge every cold branch, then hot branches after the heater is filled according to its manual.
- Close all fixtures and verify positive shutoff.
- Wait several minutes; the pump should not periodically restart.
- Run each fixture and the intended simultaneous combination.
- Measure voltage at the pump and current under load.
- Inspect every joint with dry tissue.
- Reinspect after a rough-road drive.
Never power a tank-type electric water heater while empty. Commission propane equipment through its manufacturer procedure and qualified installation requirements.
Troubleshooting
No prime
Confirm water level, valve position, clean strainer, unkinked inlet, sealed fittings and allowable lift. Open a fixture to release air. Continuous dry running is not a diagnosis method even if the pump advertises dry-run protection.
Restarts with fixtures closed
Turn the pump off. Check faucets, toilet valve, outside shower, low-point drains and hidden fittings. If dry, inspect the pump check valve/head and trapped air using the service manual.
Rapid low-flow cycling
Clean aerators and filters, measure actual flow, confirm bypass/pressure settings and check accumulator charge if present. Never raise or lower factory settings casually; you can exceed system PSI limits.
Excess vibration
Check the mounting panel, rubber feet, flexible sections, PEX support and inlet starvation. A knock behind a wall is often tubing movement rather than a failed motor.
Weak shower
Compare flow before and after the filter, heater and mixer. Check battery voltage under load. A restricted strainer or undersized valve may be the bottleneck, and a larger pump can add stress without improving the outlet.
Service schedule
- clean and inspect the inlet strainer;
- confirm the pump stops without cycling;
- inspect wiring and fuse holder for heat or corrosion;
- look for mineral staining at fittings;
- check flexible hose and tube supports;
- exercise shutoff and bypass valves;
- follow the exact RV winterization procedure.
Record model, pressure, GPM, fuse, wire size and spare fittings in the build file. The ideal pump is the lowest-impact unit that supplies the real fixtures within every pressure rating and can be serviced without removing the kitchen.
Make the tubing as reliable as the pump
Choose one compatible potable-water system, reduce restrictions and pressure-test every joint before closing the walls.
