What Size RV Fresh Water Tank? A Practical Calculator

The best fresh tank is the smallest one that covers measured daily demand, the actual distance between potable fills and a modest reserve without breaking payload or encouraging stagnant water.

Fresh-water capacity should come from measured gallons and a travel plan, not the biggest tank that can be ordered for a Sprinter or Transit. Extra capacity consumes payload every time it is filled and can reduce water turnover when it is not used.

Use this formula

fresh gallons = people × measured gallons per person per day × days between reliable fills + reserve

Then confirm:

  • full water weight and axle loading;
  • mounting volume and restraint;
  • water turnover and sanitation;
  • gray capacity and legal dump frequency;
  • freeze exposure and complete draining.

The CDC's RV water safety guidance says to fill from a safe drinking-water source and follow the RV maker's procedure for draining, disinfecting and flushing. More gallons are useful only if the water remains safe and the vehicle can carry them.

Measure a real day

Use the fixtures planned for the van—or test them in a camper van rental—and record:

  1. drinking and coffee;
  2. cooking;
  3. handwashing and tooth brushing;
  4. dishes and cleanup;
  5. pet water;
  6. exterior rinse;
  7. every shower, measured by flow × minutes.

Test at least two realistic days. A residential faucet will exaggerate demand if the van uses a low-flow aerator, while a household shower may understate waiting losses from a poorly designed water heater.

These are test ranges, not universal consumption facts. A shower at 1.0 GPM for five minutes uses 5 gallons; at 1.8 GPM it uses 9 gallons. Measure the real head and comfortable heater setting.

Add tank, brackets, pump, heater contents and gray water. Thirty gallons fresh plus 15 gallons gray can represent about 375 lb of liquid. That can consume a large share of a camper van payload and overload the rear axle before passengers and gear are added.

You can travel with a partial tank when reliable potable fills are available. Design restraints for the worst-case full tank and for liquid surge during braking and cornering.

Inside or underbody?

An interior tank stays closer to cabin temperature, shortens the pump inlet and is easier to inspect. It takes cabinet space and requires a plan for containing and detecting leaks.

An underbody tank preserves the interior but faces road impact, low clearance and freezing. Pipe, valves and fittings often freeze before the main volume. Insulation only delays heat loss. Four-season use needs an engineered heated envelope or a drain-and-dry operating mode coordinated with the insulation and heating guides.

Tank shape and usable gallons

Catalogue capacity does not guarantee the pump can withdraw every gallon. Outlet location, slope and air locking leave residual water. Leave physical room for the fill, vent, drain, level sender and access cover; do not calculate solely from the tank's bounding box.

Wide tanks need baffles or design suitable for mobile use to control surge. Support the stated tank area and avoid point-loading thin molded walls. Confirm the maker permits the chosen orientation.

The vent must pass air during fast filling and pump draw. Route it to stay sanitary and avoid sags that trap water. An inadequate vent can cause slow filling, splashback or tank deformation.

Calculate gray storage from use

Create a water balance:

fresh used = consumed + sink gray + shower gray + small losses

If a pair uses 10 gal/day and consumes 1.5 gal, up to 8.5 gal may reach gray storage. A 7-gallon portable tank needs servicing before the fresh tank runs out.

Gray water still requires authorized disposal. Rules vary by campground, public land unit and jurisdiction; follow the site authority. Size for the longest interval between approved options, not an assumption that “biodegradable soap” makes ground discharge acceptable.

Build reserve intelligently

A separate 1–3 gallon drinking-water container can remain usable when the pump or main tank fails. Keep it cool, rotate it and sanitize it according to its instructions. Do not use a container that previously held fuel, pesticides or other toxic chemicals; the CDC's safe storage guidance specifically warns against those containers.

For boondocking, confirm potable fill locations before departure. Clear-looking stream water can contain harmful microorganisms or chemicals. Use a validated treatment strategy when a source is uncertain, and understand exactly what any filter is certified to remove.
