Freezing water expands and can crack a pump housing, filter bowl, mixer cartridge or boiler. The visible tank is often not the first part to fail; small trapped volumes in valves and elbows freeze sooner.
This guide is a planning framework. The instructions for the exact tank, pump, heater, toilet, filter and mixer take priority because components drain differently.
Decide the storage state
There are two valid strategies:
- wet/operational cold-weather mode — every water component remains inside a reliably heated envelope with active freeze controls and monitored power/fuel;
- drained storage mode — the complete potable system is emptied and left in the component maker's stated storage condition.
Insulation alone is not a wet-system strategy. It slows cooling but supplies no heat. Heater ducts may warm the cabin while an underslung tank, rear shower or pipe behind a sealed panel freezes.
Use the insulation and heating hub to coordinate the climate envelope, but assume unattended loss of power or fuel can still occur. A drainable system provides a safe fallback.
Build a component inventory
List every place water can remain:
- fresh tank and outlet sump;
- tank fill and vent sags;
- isolation valve;
- pump strainer and pump head;
- accumulator;
- filter housing and cartridges;
- cold and hot pipe low points;
- storage or instant heater;
- check valves and pressure regulator;
- kitchen mixer and pull-out hose;
- shower mixer, head and hose;
- exterior wash point;
- toilet flush valve;
- grey trap, tank and dump valve.
Mark drain method and storage position for each. If one item cannot be accessed, redesign it before winter.
Follow the manuals before a generic sequence
Whale's Watermaster manual warns that freezing can seriously damage pipework and pump. Its stated process includes draining the tank, opening outlets, using the pump briefly to purge, then disconnecting and emptying the pump. That is product guidance, not a universal procedure.
Alde's Compact installation instructions require the freshwater heater to be drained when frost is possible and describe a safety/drain valve and air-entry path. A Truma, Whale, electric storage or hydronic unit may require different steps.
Collect all manuals into one build document and resolve contradictions with the manufacturers or a competent service technician.
Drain-only framework
Only use this order where every manual supports it:
- Park so the designed drains are the true low points.
- Switch off and cool the water heater completely.
- Disconnect shore power and isolate heater energy/fuel as instructed.
- Switch off the water pump and disconnect any external water supply.
- Open a tap to relieve pressure.
- Drain and legally dispose of fresh and grey tanks.
- Open tank, hot/cold low-point and appliance drain valves.
- Put the water heater in its exact bypass/drain state and verify visible discharge.
- Remove filter cartridges and empty housings as instructed.
- Empty strainer, pump and accumulator through their approved process.
- Open every hot and cold tap, mixer, shower and exterior outlet in the storage position.
- Operate toilet and auxiliary valves as their manuals specify.
- Empty traps and waste branches.
- Label the controls “winterised—do not energise heater or pump”.
Do not run the pump dry for an extended period. A brief purge permitted by one pump manual may damage another product or fail to clear a distant branch.
Compressed-air caution
Compressed air can clear some compatible pipe layouts, but high pressure is hazardous and a blast of air may atomise dirty water. It can also leave water behind after air takes the easiest path.
Before using it, confirm:
- the vehicle and every appliance allows blow-out winterisation;
- the regulator pressure and connection point;
- the heater bypass and filter state;
- whether one outlet must be opened at a time;
- sensitive valves that must be removed or isolated;
- eye/face protection and safe discharge.
Never connect an unregulated workshop compressor and never pressure a blocked, heated or closed vessel. If documentation is unclear, use a competent leisure-vehicle service provider; the campervan builder directory is a starting point for regional specialists.
Antifreeze caution
Never put automotive engine antifreeze into a potable-water system. If a potable recreational-vehicle plumbing antifreeze is used, it must be permitted by the complete system and used at its labelled concentration. Bypass equipment that the manuals exclude and capture/dispose of the product correctly.
Do not assume “non-toxic” means it can be released on the ground or mixed with every filter, heater or seal. Drain-first design usually reduces the chemical volume and spring flushing needed.
Prevent hygiene problems during storage
Stagnant, warm water and deposits support microbial growth. The Drinking Water Inspectorate recommends secure, cool, maintained stored-water systems and periodic inspection. Leave the tank in the maker's clean storage state, protect openings from insects and dust and keep the dedicated fill hose capped.
Remove replaceable filters if storage instructions call for it. A wet carbon cartridge left for months is not automatically safe to reuse. Clean shower heads and inspect tank sediment before storage.
Recommission in spring
- Inspect tank, brackets, hoses, drains and visible fittings for frost or rodent damage.
- Confirm every heater and valve is in the normal operating configuration.
- Install new or correctly stored filters.
- Clean/disinfect using the tank, vehicle and product method—do not invent a bleach concentration.
- Fill from a known potable source.
- Keep an electric storage element off until the vessel is proven full.
- Purge cold then hot branches and flush until the approved procedure is complete.
- Run the pump to shut-off, isolate it and inspect for leaks.
- Commission the heater from its manual.
- Check taste, odour and clarity; use separate safe drinking water if anything is doubtful.

Winter-ready design checklist
- every water component has a documented drain method;
- true low points are accessible;
- hot-water bypass/drain valves can be reached;
- drain outlets have continuous fall and visible discharge;
- air can enter vessels as they empty;
- filters and pump strainer are removable;
- no capped dead legs or sagging hidden hoses exist;
- exterior pipes and shower are included;
- pump/heater cannot be energised accidentally while dry;
- winter and recommissioning steps are stored in the van.
Winterisation succeeds because the water system was designed to drain. If emptying it requires dismantling furniture in freezing rain, the design is not complete.
