Condensation is predictable: warm humid air contacts a cold surface and water forms. A van has cold steel, large glass area and a small air volume, so breathing and cooking can move it from comfortable to dripping within one night.
Solve the balance, not just the glass:
- reduce moisture generated inside;
- extract it at the source;
- provide controlled replacement air;
- warm/insulate vulnerable surfaces;
- ventilate hidden zones and dry the van.

Trace leak versus condensation
Condensation tends to occur on many cold surfaces after occupancy. Leaks track rain, car washing or one roof/window penetration and can occur while the van is empty.
Dry and mark the area. Inspect fan and AC flanges, solar glands, racks, marker lights, windows, body seams and doors. Water can run inside ribs and emerge elsewhere. Never seal damp material behind a vapor layer. Repair the source and dry thoroughly.
Design the air path
An exhaust fan needs incoming air. If the van is sealed, it creates negative pressure and pulls through random gaps. Open a screened window or designed vent away from the fan so air crosses beds, people or kitchen.

Low continuous flow overnight is often quieter and steadier than letting humidity accumulate and purging at dawn. Use the lowest effective speed and a predictable intake.
Roof fan selection and position
Decide fan location alongside roof AC, solar, racks and structural ribs. Verify open-lid clearance and service access. The exact installation manual governs cutout, roof thickness, supply, polarity and sealants.
Before cutting:
- inspect both sides for ribs, wires, airbags and headliner structure;
- confirm the model's opening, orientation and rear/side clearance;
- create a level, supported mounting surface as required;
- plan a fused 12V circuit with the US electrical calculator;
- use compatible butyl/sealant and the specified fasteners;
- leak-test before insulation and again after the first trips;
- retain interior access for service and future resealing.
Do not copy another van's hole measurement. Models, roof adapters and year-specific ribs differ.
Passive vents and pressure outlets
Passive vents provide background exchange without electrical demand, but wind and stack effect change their output. They do not replace local extraction during cooking/showering. Existing factory pressure vents may help doors close but were not necessarily designed as occupied-space ventilation; do not assume their capacity.
Fixed vents required by fuel-burning appliance instructions or other rules must remain open. Screens and filters collect dust and reduce flow, so provide cleaning access. Never store bedding over heater return or hot-air outlets.
Mattress, cab and cabinet airflow
Moisture moves through bedding and can condense on a cold solid platform. Use slats, a ventilating underlay or a designed raised layer with an inlet and outlet path. Lift the mattress after cold nights and inspect its perimeter.
Vent benches, wardrobes and gear garages. A grille into a sealed dead end is cosmetic, not airflow. Keep snowy boots and wetsuits in a drainable zone and run air until dry.
Cab glass produces a large cold area. Insulated removable covers reduce surface cooling, but sealing the cab completely can trap moisture. Dry the windshield and ventilate before storage.
Hot and humid climates
Outdoor ventilation works best when outside air is drier or cooler than inside. In very humid heat, ventilation may not reduce absolute moisture and can oppose air conditioning. A properly sized AC system must manage condensate through an unobstructed drain; inspect insulation and seals around ducts/roof assembly.
Shade and vent accumulated hot air before starting AC. Never rely on a fan or insulation alone to protect occupants or pets in a parked vehicle. Powered cooling needs a verified shore, generator or large electrical design and a failure plan.
Heating without trapping moisture
Heating can raise surfaces above dew point, but people continue adding water. Keep the required air exchange running. Room-sealed fuel heaters keep combustion separate when properly installed, unlike unvented portable units.
The CDC warns that generators, grills, camp stoves and other fuel-burning devices must not be used inside a camper and that carbon monoxide is odorless and potentially fatal; see CDC clinical guidance. Use an approved heating system, maintain ventilation and fit/test smoke and CO alarms.
Night routine
- Isolate wet gear and start drying airflow.
- Heat only with an approved system.
- Start roof exhaust before cooking or showering.
- Open the deliberate opposite intake.
- Keep mattress/cabinet paths clear.
- Run a quiet background setting overnight when safe for the fan/weather.
- Purge in the morning, wipe remaining glass and lift bedding.
- Dry fully before closing the vehicle for storage.
