Condensation appears when moist air reaches a surface colder than the air's dew point. In a campervan, two sleeping adults, a boiling pan, damp coats and a cold steel shell can create that condition within hours. Wiping the windows treats the evidence, not the moisture balance.
A durable solution combines four controls:
- reduce avoidable moisture sources;
- exhaust water vapour where it is produced;
- supply replacement air across the occupied space;
- keep vulnerable surfaces warmer and storage ventilated.
The US EPA's current moisture-control guidance is building-focused but the physics transfers: keep humidity controlled, dry wet materials promptly, ventilate cooking/washing and insulate cold surfaces. A van requires faster response because its air volume is much smaller.
Identify moisture sources

Track humidity with a simple hygrometer. EPA guidance suggests keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally around 30–50% where practical. In a cold van, local surface temperatures can still cause condensation at a seemingly acceptable central reading, so inspect corners and bridges too.
Leak or condensation?
Condensation usually correlates with cold weather, occupancy and broad cold surfaces. A leak may follow rain or washing, appear around one penetration and persist when unoccupied.
Dry the area, mark the boundary and test systematically. Inspect roof fan, solar glands, windows, marker lights, seams and door seals. Do not add absorbent lining over an unexplained damp patch. Water can travel along ribs and appear far from the entry point.
Design the airflow path
Extraction works only when replacement air can enter. A roof fan exhausting with every window and vent sealed will create poor flow and may pull air through unintended gaps. Plan a path from a low or opposite opening, through the occupied/cooking zone and out at the roof.

Opening two points slightly often creates better crossflow than opening one door widely. In cold weather, continuous low airflow can remove moisture with less comfort penalty than allowing humidity to build and then purging the van.
Roof fan planning
Place the fan before solar, roof racks and ceiling furniture are final. Check the exact manual for cut-out, roof-thickness range, orientation, wiring and sealants. Current international MaxxFan installation instructions specify a 355 mm square opening for the covered models, a nominal 12V supply, polarity and compatible sealant requirements. Other models differ—never transfer one cut-out blindly.
Before cutting:
- inspect ribs, factory wiring and airbags on both sides;
- verify the open lid clears solar, bars and aerials;
- create structural support appropriate to the roof and fan;
- plan the fused electrical circuit with the campervan calculator;
- use the exact flange/sealant system and leak-test before lining;
- retain future access for inspection and resealing.
A fan rated for high airflow does not need to run at maximum overnight. Low speed, a deliberate intake and local airflow around sleeping areas can be quieter and more effective.
Passive and fixed ventilation
Passive vents work without power and provide background exchange, but performance changes with wind, temperature and blockage. They do not replace powered extraction for cooking or showering. Fixed safety ventilation may be required by appliance instructions, gas design or relevant standards. Never cover it to “keep the heat in.”
Fly screens, filters and grilles reduce effective area as they collect debris. Add inspection and cleaning to the maintenance schedule. Keep luggage away from heater return air and warm-air outlets.
Stop mattress and cupboard mould
Mattresses are warm and moisture-permeable; the platform beneath can be cold. Provide an air gap with ventilating mesh, slats or another designed layer and give air a route in and out. Lift bedding after cold nights and inspect edges.
Vent closed wardrobes, benches and garages. Do not pack wet equipment against the metal shell. Avoid dead-end compartments: a decorative grille with no exit path may not create meaningful flow. Dry spills and leaks quickly—EPA guidance notes that drying damp materials within roughly 24–48 hours often prevents mould growth.
Heating helps, but is not ventilation
Heating raises air and surface temperatures, which can reduce immediate surface condensation. It does not remove the water. If the van is heated with all ventilation shut, absolute moisture remains and may condense later as the vehicle cools.
Vented diesel/petrol and LPG systems separate combustion appropriately when installed to their manuals. Portable camping heaters, barbecues and cooking appliances must not become cabin heaters. A cold-night operating routine
- Arrive with wet items isolated in the drying zone.
- Heat the van while maintaining required background ventilation.
- Cook with lids and roof extraction running.
- Keep a small intake open opposite the exhaust.
- Do not block vents behind curtains or luggage.
- Run low extraction during sleep if conditions and equipment allow.
- In the morning, wipe remaining glass, lift bedding and purge humid air.
- Dry the van fully before storage.
Diagnose recurring condensation
If moisture continues, record outdoor temperature, indoor temperature/RH, occupants, cooking/showering and fan setting. Inspect the same surfaces. Patterns reveal whether the limiting factor is moisture production, insufficient airflow, a cold bridge or a leak.
