Campervan Cabinets and Storage: Build Light, Store Safe

Storage is successful when the van stays within weight limits, frequently used items are reachable, every load is restrained and a failed pump or cable remains accessible.

Campervan storage has to perform while accelerating, braking, cornering and vibrating. Domestic cabinetry assumptions are not enough. Design from an inventory, assign every item a travel restraint and include the furniture itself in payload.

Build an inventory by mass and frequency

List what actually travels, including food, water, tools, recovery gear, bikes, bedding and seasonal equipment. Mark each item by:

  • weight and approximate size;
  • daily, weekly or emergency access;
  • clean, wet, dirty or hazardous status;
  • whether it needs ventilation;
  • whether it may leak;
  • whether it must be reached from outside.

Put dense items low and near the vehicle's centre, then check axle loads. Long rear overhangs amplify the effect of a garage load on the rear axle. GOV.UK states that the driver is responsible for roadworthiness and safe loading; its motorhome weight guidance explains maximum authorised mass. Weigh the completed, trip-ready van by axle rather than trusting a component spreadsheet alone.

Do not infer strength from thickness. A well-designed thin panel with proper edge support can outperform a heavy unsupported board. Make a representative cabinet corner, load it beyond normal use and road-test the fastening method before repeating it throughout the van.

The base-vehicle maker's converter manual governs approved mounting areas and limits. Ford, for example, directs converters to its Body and Equipment Mounting Manual. Use the manual for the exact model; do not drill simply because a rib looks substantial. Structural changes near suspension, steering, braking and seat-belt mounting areas can also affect DVLA evidence requirements under the structurally modified vehicle guidance.

Restrain every load

Positive latches are mandatory in practice. Magnetic catches alone may release when contents shift. Test doors and drawers loaded, on rough roads and under hard braking. Put heavier objects behind stronger fronts and secondary dividers.

Overhead lockers deserve extra caution:

  • reserve them for light clothing and soft goods;
  • radius corners at head level;
  • use stays that cannot drop unexpectedly;
  • add retainers so contents do not fall when opened;
  • keep them clear of roof-fan, curtain and emergency-exit movement.

Open storage can work for bedding but should not hold hard objects at passenger head height.

Make utilities removable

Cabinetry must not entomb the conversion. Create labelled access for tank drains, pump strainer, water isolation, heater service points, fuse board, cable connections and appliance ventilation. A decorative panel that needs ten screws and removal of the bed is not routine access.

Coordinate the design with the water-system guide, electrical calculator and conversion build order. Keep water fittings away from electrical equipment and preserve required clearances around batteries, inverters, heaters and refrigerators.

Use removable screwed panels at service zones. Photograph routes before closing walls and attach a small diagram inside the nearest hatch. Future fault-finding is part of the design.

Control moisture and noise

Allow air behind mattresses, inside damp-gear lockers and around exterior metal. Do not block permanent vents. Seal exposed timber edges where spills are expected, but avoid trapping moisture in an unventilated void.

Rattles usually come from relative movement. Secure cable looms and pipes independently, use dividers, stop doors moving against catches and isolate hard contact points with suitable durable material. After the first trips, inspect for witness marks, loose fasteners and chafe.

Commission before finishing

  1. Weigh each completed unit before installation.
  2. Load it with its real inventory.
  3. Pull in every direction it will experience.
  4. Confirm travel latches with the van pitched and on uneven ground.
  5. Drive a rough but safe route and listen by zone.
  6. Recheck fixings, panel joints and utility clearance.
  7. Weigh the stocked van by axle.
  8. Only then add cosmetic trims that would hide fasteners.

Good storage makes departure boring: every item has a place, nothing becomes a projectile and no essential service is buried. Use the complete layout method to place those cabinets around people rather than squeezing people around cabinets.
