Campervan Heating Options: Diesel, LPG or Electric?

Choose heating from fuel availability, coldest intended trip, electrical support, altitude and installation responsibility. The safest heater is a correctly sized approved system installed and maintained to its exact manual.

A heater is only one part of winter comfort. Insulation slows loss, ventilation removes moisture and the heater replaces lost heat. Oversizing the appliance to compensate for open gaps and wet air can produce short cycling, noise, wasted fuel and uneven temperature.

Define the coldest intended use, whether hookup is normal, available fuel, altitude, occupants and freeze-sensitive water. Then compare systems.

Vented diesel and petrol air heaters

These burn fuel in a sealed combustion circuit and pass cabin air over a heat exchanger. Correct installation keeps combustion intake and exhaust outside while warm cabin air remains separate. They still need 12V power for the glow phase, pump, fan and controller.

Advantages include compact packaging and off-grid endurance. Trade-offs include ticking pumps, fan noise, exhaust placement, fuel-line routing and servicing. Repeated low-output operation can contribute to deposits on some heaters; use and maintain the exact product as its manufacturer specifies.

Do not buy by “2kW” or “5kW” sticker alone. Approved output range, altitude capability, control strategy, parts support and installation evidence matter more. The diesel-heater installation planning guide sets the design gates.

LPG heating

A room-sealed LPG furnace can provide effective dry heat when combustion is correctly vented. It may integrate well when the van already has professionally designed cylinder storage, regulator, pipework and other gas appliances. The heater and gas system must be installed, tested and serviced by someone competent for the relevant work.

Gas availability differs around Europe, cylinder storage uses valuable volume and permanent ventilation must remain clear. Never substitute a portable cabinet heater or cooking flame. Fire-service guidance warns against using stoves, barbecues or heaters not designed for enclosed caravan/camper use.

Electric heating: do the energy calculation

Resistance heat converts electricity to heat efficiently at the appliance but demands enormous battery energy.

A 1,000W heater may draw around 90A from a 12V battery after losses. Running it for six hours would need about 6kWh before other loads—far beyond many campervan systems. A campsite hookup can make a small heater practical, provided the pitch supply, lead, RCD/MCB arrangement and appliance are suitable. Never exceed the hookup rating or use coiled extension leads under heavy load.

A heat pump can deliver more heat per unit of electricity than resistance heating, but cold-weather performance, defrost, shore supply, roof space and noise must be checked on the exact unit. It is not automatically an off-grid winter solution.

Sizing from heat loss

Heating demand rises with:

  • larger exposed area and more glass;
  • colder outdoor design temperature;
  • thinner or discontinuous insulation;
  • deliberate ventilation and unintended air leakage;
  • open cab and rear-door thermal bridges;
  • frequent door opening and wet equipment.

An installer or manufacturer can assess the vehicle and intended conditions. A smaller well-matched modulating heater may maintain temperature more comfortably than an oversized unit cycling rapidly. But undersizing can fail during the intended coldest trip. State the use truthfully, including altitude.

Altitude and fuel quality

Lower oxygen at altitude changes combustion. Some heaters compensate automatically within a stated range; others need settings, a different pump strategy or are not approved beyond a limit. Verify the latest manual for the exact model and controller. Do not assume a generic “high altitude mode” works everywhere.

Fuel age, contamination and paraffin waxing in extreme cold can also affect reliability. Use the fuel and maintenance instructions, mount components correctly and keep the tank above its required reserve.

Placement and heat distribution

The heater must fit with protected combustion intake/exhaust, fuel route, electrical supply, return air and hot-air duct. Warm air should reach the occupied zone without overheating furniture, bedding, wiring or water pipes. Return air should come from a clean area where luggage cannot block it.

Consider the cab, rear bed and water system. One outlet under a front seat may leave the rear garage and tanks freezing. Conversely, long restrictive ducting can exceed manufacturer limits. Design distribution before cabinetry and use the exact permitted duct sizes, bends and outlet areas.

Safety baseline

  • use a heater approved for the intended vehicle application;
  • follow the exact current installation and operating manuals;
  • use trained/qualified installation where the manufacturer or work requires it;
  • keep exhaust and combustion intake outside and away from openings as specified;
  • never block return or hot-air outlets;
  • maintain required fixed ventilation;
  • fit and test suitable smoke and vehicle/caravan carbon-monoxide alarms;
  • know CO symptoms and leave the vehicle immediately if an alarm sounds or symptoms appear.

The NHS lists headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, chest pain and shortness of breath among carbon-monoxide poisoning symptoms. Go outside and seek urgent advice; do not re-enter until the source is addressed.

Complete the condensation plan alongside heating. Warm air without moisture removal simply stores water until the van cools.
