Victron SmartShunt vs BMV-712: Which Should You Buy?
The SmartShunt and BMV-712 are Victron's two battery monitors for the van/RV market. The measurement hardware is identical — the difference is how you read the data.
SmartShunt 500A (~$65)
What you get:
- 500A shunt with Bluetooth electronics built in
- Connects to VictronConnect app on iOS or Android
- Shows: SoC%, voltage, current, power (watts), amp-hours consumed, time-to-go
- Historical data and trend graphs in the app
- Configurable battery parameters (capacity, chemistry, Peukert exponent)
- No display — app only
Installation: Mount the shunt on the battery negative cable. One small wire to the battery positive for the monitor's own power. That's it.
Best for: Minimal installs, builders who always have their phone, Victron GX system users (SmartShunt integrates directly with Cerbo GX via VE.Direct).
BMV-712 Smart (~$100)
What you get:
- Same shunt electronics as the SmartShunt
- Dedicated 2.5" display panel (mounts in a 52mm gauge hole or surface-mount)
- Display shows: SoC%, voltage, current, time-to-go, temperature (with optional temp sensor)
- Bluetooth to VictronConnect app in addition to the display
- Two relays for alarm/control outputs
Best for: Van builders who want always-visible battery data without reaching for a phone, builds with a dedicated electrical panel.
Which should you choose?
Choose SmartShunt if:
- You're minimizing components and always have your phone nearby
- You're integrating into a Victron GX system (Cerbo GX reads SmartShunt directly)
- You're budget-conscious (saves $35)
Choose BMV-712 if:
- You want a dedicated display showing battery status at a glance
- You're building a van with an electrical panel where a gauge fits naturally
- You prefer not to depend on your phone to check battery status
- You want temperature monitoring (with the $15 temperature sensor add-on)
Both vs the Renogy alternative
The Renogy 500A Battery Monitor (~$60) is similar to the SmartShunt — shunt-based, app-connected, no display. It's a reasonable alternative if your system is all Renogy. The Victron ecosystem (VictronConnect app, VRM portal for remote monitoring, GX integration) is more mature and widely supported by van build professionals.
Setup tip for both
After installation, configure:
- Battery capacity: Your actual Ah (e.g., 200Ah)
- Battery type: LiFePO4 (or manually set charge voltage to 14.2V)
- Charged voltage: 13.2V (the voltage at which the monitor considers the battery "full" and resets the counter)
- Tail current: 4% (the charge current percentage at which charging is considered complete)
These settings, entered once in VictronConnect, make the SoC% readings accurate from day one.
