Victron SmartShunt 500A vs IP65: choose for the installation
Buying comparison · Reviewed 2026-10-29 · Exact US product variants
The buying decision
Both selected listings are 500A/50mV Bluetooth SmartShunts. Choose using the exact model’s environmental protection and mounting requirements rather than expecting the IP65 name to provide more battery capacity or a higher shunt current rating.
Choose SHU050150050 when…
The standard model’s documented enclosure and mounting requirements suit the protected location in your build.
Choose SHU065150050 when…
The IP65 model’s documented protection is relevant to the proposed location and the complete installation still meets its manual.

Place the monitor correctly in the system’s negative-current path so that loads and charging are measured as intended. Choose the shunt rating from the actual system requirements, and check the manufacturer’s connection and commissioning instructions.
Protection does not replace installation planning
Check the complete product specification rather than interpreting an enclosure rating as permission to mount anywhere. Consider moisture, terminals, cable access and service space together. Protect the entire installation, not just the electronics enclosure.
Compare monitoring needs separately
Both listings use Bluetooth. If you need a dedicated physical display, investigate that requirement separately rather than assuming either unit includes one. The existing SmartShunt-versus-BMV guide covers that different buying decision.
Before placing the order
Save the exact model number, check the current specification and installation instructions, and confirm the selected supplier configuration. Include any mounting, monitoring, cabling or accessories required for your build when comparing the complete cost.
