The Mercedes Sprinter is one of the most popular platforms for US van conversions — its size, payload, and aftermarket support make it a strong base. Here's what's specific to wiring a house electrical system in a Sprinter.

The alternator: plan for a DC-DC charger

Sprinters (NCV3, ~2007+, and the newer VS30) use smart/variable-voltage alternators that adjust output for efficiency. This means a DC-DC charger (not a direct connection) is required to reliably charge a LiFePO4 house battery from the alternator while driving — see DC-DC charger sizing for choosing the right size.

Battery placement options

Common house battery locations in Sprinter builds:

  • Under the passenger seat — popular for moderate cable runs to both the engine bay and habitation area, and proximity to some factory wiring routes.
  • Rear cabinet/garage area — keeps the battery out of living space, common in larger builds with a dedicated electrical bay.
  • Underbody box (4x4 models) — more common on raised 4x4 Sprinters with the ground clearance to mount externally, though it adds weatherproofing requirements.

Use factory ground points where possible

Sprinters have factory chassis ground points — bolted connections to bare metal — in several locations including near the seat bases and along the frame rails. Using an existing, verified ground point (cleaned to bare metal, proper crimped ring terminal) is generally preferable to drilling a new one, but confirm it's a true ground and not part of a sensitive factory circuit.

Keep your build's negative bond separate from factory grounds where unsure

If you're not confident a given point is a clean chassis ground, it's safer to create your own dedicated bonding point with a new hole, star washers, and dielectric grease, at a location you've verified is bare metal and structurally sound.

Solar and roof considerations

Sprinter roofs (especially high-roof models) offer generous space for solar — 400-600W arrays are common. Cable runs from the roof to the electrical bay can be long depending on battery placement; size accordingly using the AWG wire size chart.
