Running a microwave in a van is entirely feasible from a battery perspective — microwaves heat food quickly, so the total energy consumed is modest. The key is making sure your inverter can handle the peak wattage.

For inverter sizing in general: what size inverter for a van or RV? and the inverters guide.

Microwave wattage reality

The wattage printed on a microwave label (600W, 700W, 1,000W) is the cooking power — what's delivered to the food. The wall draw (what the inverter must supply) is always higher:

Cooking powerTypical wall draw
600W~900–1,000W
700W~1,050–1,150W
900W~1,200–1,400W
1,000W~1,400–1,600W
1,200W~1,600–1,900W

Size your inverter for the wall draw, not the cooking wattage. A 1,000W cooking microwave typically needs an inverter rated for 1,500–2,000W.

  • 600–700W cooking microwave: 1,500W inverter minimum
  • 900–1,000W cooking microwave: 2,000W inverter recommended
  • 1,200W cooking microwave: 2,000W minimum; budget headroom for other simultaneous loads

Always pure sine wave — microwave control boards and inverters are sensitive electronics. Modified sine wave can cause interference, erratic operation, or premature failure.

Is a microwave worth it in a van?

Pros: Fast reheating of leftovers (2–3 minutes vs. 10–15 on a stovetop), useful for steaming vegetables, defrosting. Familiar cooking method.

Cons: High instantaneous draw requires a 2,000W inverter. Takes counter space or cabinet space. Induction cooking is often more versatile for actual cooking.

Many van lifers with an induction cooktop skip the microwave entirely — the induction top handles everything a microwave does, and more, with the same inverter. Others find a compact 600W microwave genuinely useful for quick reheating.

Recommended van microwave: A small, low-power model like the Toshiba EM131A5C-BS (1,100W cooking, ~$80) or the Commercial Chef 0.6 cu ft (600W cooking, ~$60) — lower wattage means more manageable wall draw and fits better in a van cabinet.
