A campervan conversion can cost almost anything because “conversion” can mean a removable bed box and leisure battery or a professionally engineered four-berth motor caravan. The useful answer is a budget model that exposes what is included, who installs it and which risks are still unpriced.
Keep three pots separate from day one:
- base vehicle and acquisition;
- mechanical baseline and repair reserve;
- conversion design, materials and labour.

The bands overlap deliberately. A self-builder buying premium components can outspend a restrained professional specification, and a simple van can still need expensive compliant seating or roof work.

Labour changes the total faster than components
DIY does not make labour free; it moves the cost into time, tools and error risk. Estimate hours for design, sourcing, stripping, templates, cutting, installation, finishing, troubleshooting and documentation. Multiply by what that time is worth to you, even if it does not leave the bank account.
Pay specialists where competence or consequence warrants it. Roofs, structural openings, belted seats, gas, mains electricity and complex vehicle integration can carry safety, insurance and compliance consequences. Ask for a defined scope, component specification, exclusions, tax position, lead time and change-control process—not only a total.

The exact quote could sit well outside this example. A pop-top, approved rear seating, indoor shower or premium finish can move several lines materially.
Base-van costs that do not belong in the fit-out number
Before buying, allow for history checks, inspection, immediate service, tyres, brakes, timing-belt or transmission work where applicable, security, insurance and tax. Cash flow matters as much as total
Build a month-by-month purchasing plan. Long-lead windows, heaters, seats and appliances may need early deposits; ordering them before the layout is frozen creates expensive incompatibility. Buy in this order:

- hidden infrastructure before finishes;
- tested systems before fitted furniture closes access;
- decorative choices last.
Keep a committed-cost column and an actual-cost column. When one line overruns, consciously reduce another or increase the approved budget. Do not finance overruns through the contingency silently.
Where to save—and where not to
Good savings come from a smaller van, simpler layout, fewer openings, modular furniture, patient sourcing and eliminating low-value appliances. Poor savings remove cable protection, ventilation, structural integrity, safe fuel installation, secure battery mounting or compliant seating.
Used components can work when condition is assessable and installation requirements remain available. Be cautious with batteries of unknown history, damaged heaters, obsolete charge equipment and safety-critical seat hardware.
